I am a geochemist with interests in reconstructing climatic and environmental change across a broad scope of Earth history. Much of my research focuses on applying organic geochemistry and compound specific isotope measurements to lake sediments to understand past changes in climate and carbon cycling. In particular I have been working to help resolve how multi-decadal drought could have led to the collapse of the Classic Maya civilization. I am also applying compound-specific radiocarbon analyses to understand how ancient land use in Central American forests has impacted soil organic carbon storage. Additionally, I have been working on applying clumped isotope measurements of bivalve shells to constrain ocean surface temperatures in the Eocene high latitudes and subtropics.
