I research morphological evolution in vertebrate animals, focusing on a number of reptile clades during the Mesozoic Era. My dissertation research focused on the origin and early radiation of Sauria, the clade that includes all living reptile groups. I continue to examine this problem through study of microvertebrate faunas, microCT reconstruction of fossil material, and phylogenetic reconstructions using parsimony and Bayesian methods.
My project at Yale involves developing a stronger biological context for muscular and ligamentous attachments in fossil reptiles by using high-contrast staining of tissues in modern reptile limbs. I will employ this context to examine limb evolution and range of motion in Pterosauria, the oldest-known group of flying vertebrates.
